Reports of abuse at Sde Teiman have already surfaced in Israeli and Arab media after an outcry from Israeli and Palestinian rights groups over conditions there. CNN has requested permission from the Israeli military to access the Sde Teiman base. Al-Bursh was arrested along with 10 other medical workers in December during the Israeli military ground invasion of the Jabalya refugee camp, CNN previously reported. He was taken away while treating patients in Al-Awda Hospital, according to the statement. Earlier on Thursday, Israel released dozens of Gaza detainees via the Kerem Shalom crossing in southern Israel. The seven-month bombardment of Gaza has killed more than 34,600 people, according to the Gaza health ministry. Concerns are also heightened over an anticipated Israeli military operation in southern Gaza’s Rafah, prompting renewed calls for a ceasefire.

Hundreds of patients and medical staff began evacuating the besieged Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City on Saturday, as the Israeli military tightens its control of the medical complex, which it accuses Hamas of using as a military command center. On Saturday morning, at least 450 patients began walking from the hospital toward the southern part of the enclave, the director general of Gaza’s health ministry, Munir al-Bursh, told the Al Jazeera television channel. Patients were pushed in wheelchairs and on gurneys, and some hobbled on crutches, according to witnesses speaking to the channel.

Hamas has repeatedly denied that its fighters hide under hospitals, as have Gazan health officials and hospital directors. Zarquot said “the tunnel they claim to be a Hamas tunnel is actually an electrical wire assembly point. The World Health Organization has recorded at least 137 attacks on health facilities in Gaza, which it said resulted in 521 deaths and 686 injuries. Intense hostilities surrounding several hospitals in northern Gaza are preventing safe access for health staff, the injured, and other patients” the statement reads. Israel has alleged a Hamas center is hidden in the basement there, a claim which the hospital staff and Hamas have denied.

CNN —A US official with knowledge of American intelligence says Hamas has a command node under the Al-Shifa hospital, uses fuel intended for it and its fighters regularly cluster in and around Gaza’s largest hospital. The information comes after comments made Sunday by a top White House official that Hamas is using hospitals and civilian facilities. Hamas and hospital officials have denied the accusation that the hospital is being used as a command center. But Israel has insisted that patients can be evacuated from the hospital. “Regrettably, the hospital is not functioning as a hospital anymore,” it said.

Babies at Al-Shifa hospital were moved to a different part of the complex overnight after the neonatal unit ran out of oxygen, a senior health official in Gaza tells CNN. The oxygen in the neonatal unit had earlier run out after a generator was damaged due to a nearby strike, Al Bursh added, which led to the deaths of three babies since Friday night. Staff say they are under siege from Israeli forces and unable to leave the hospital, though an Israeli military spokesperson has denied that. At a briefing Saturday evening, Daniel Hagari said hospital staff had requested assistance to move the babies out of Al Shifa altogether, to a safer hospital. Al-Shifa is the largest hospital in Gaza.
